Contrary to rumours circulating on social media today, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan is still the brand ambassador of the Incredible India campaign. India’s tourism ministry has clarified that it has not removed the actor from its popular ad campaign.
The confusion arose over the wording of a Right to Information Act public petition and a tweet from a member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Khan was appointed the brand ambassador of the campaign in 2008, and starred in various ads during his eight-year stint.
Khan has attracted controversy since November, when he expressed alarm over growing intolerance in India and said that his wife, film director Kiran Rao had spoken about moving out of India — a statement which he termed disastrous.
The comments created considerable controversy, which resulted in protests, a sedition case against the actor and attacks on the e-commerce platform Snapdeal for which he is a brand ambassador.
Khan finally issued clarification that he had no intention of leaving the country and did not need anyone’s endorsement.
